This is a powerful speech.
Leslie Morgan Steiner was in an abusive relationship, though at first she didn’t realize it. In a talk at TEDxRainier, she tells the disturbing story of her relationship, correcting misconceptions many people hold about victims of domestic violence, and explaining how we can all help break the silence.
If you or someone you know is facing domestic violence or an abusive relationship, you can find a list of resources here. The U.S. National Sexual Assault Hotline is 1-800-656-4673 (HOPE), and RAINN offers a secure online hotline.
This is important.
In Canada, call 1-800-799-7233 or visit http://www.thehotline.org/
In the US: call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE).
UK: call Women’s Aid at 0808 2000 247.
Australia: call 1800RESPECT at 1800 737 732.
Worldwide: visit International Directory of Domestic Violence Agencies for a global list of helplines and crisis centers.
Male victims of abuse can call:
"don we now our gay apparel" uhh wtf? why not straight apparel? seriously guys its 2013 all this blatant heterophobia needs to stop. im an ally.
Because I still have this sad, hopeless belief that the people featured on this blog will actually listen when people explain things to them, I made a handy-dandy chart in an attempt to explain marginalization versus minority status.
It’s true that some minorities are marginalized … but some minorities are just that: a small subsection of the larger population. Blue-eyed people, former presidents, otherkin, tulpamancers, Mormons, people who actually like Project Runway: all of these small populations are minorities, but they AREN’T marginalized. In other words, they do not face systemic prejudice, bigotry, and oppression simply for being who they are.
There are National Socialists and Fascists here on Tumblr but everyone feels the need to send anon hate to fucking trans* teens who express their anger towards cis people, and the system of oppression that they benefit from.
I summed up my issue with Libertarians for a friend like this: Ultimately they want all the same thing conservatives want - no food stamps, no welfare, no free education, no public health initiatives, no taxes - but they’re almost kind of meaner about it. The ONLY difference between a Republican Congressman and the 19-year-old kid in your dorm hallway with the RON PAUL 2012 sticker is that the latter is more into weed and against war. Which liberals have been on board with, you know, pretty much always. To borrow from Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada: “Groundbreaking.”
totalitarian dystopian future lit is like “what if the government got so powerful that all the bad stuff that’s already happening ALSO HAPPENED TO WHITE PEOPLE?”
Contrary to stereotypical images, which peg LGBT people as disproportionately white, male, urban and wealthy, a new survey shows that the LGBT community is actually largely African American. According to the report, released by Gallup earlier this week, 4.6 percent of African Americans responded “yes” when asked if they identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, along with four percent of Hispanics, 4.3 percent of Asians and 3.2 percent of Caucasians.

Scary. Insane. Ridiculous. Invasive. Wrong. The Washington Post reports that the FBI has had the ability to secretly activate a computer’s camera “without triggering the light that lets users know it is recording” for years now. What in the hell is going on? What kind of world do we live in?
to the people who think that lesbians are paid attention as much as gay men in society, here is some news
I’m pretty sure lesbian porn is bigger than gay guy porn
Ah yes, fetishization, what good representation
I will never trust any ‘ally’ who talks about how we “need” them
That’s shit we hear from our abusers, thanks
That’s called manipulation, power play, emotional blackmail
this is so brilliant and succinct - i never thought about the why of why that was so shitty before. wow.
maybe part of the reason you see more trans people on the internet isnt because its trendy and is actually because its safer to be out on the internet than it is in face to face interactions lol
holy fucking shit
get this circulated. like, everywhere.
One of my male “friends” posted his ex-girlfriend on Is Anyone Up?
I promptly told him to go fuck himself with a knife, and unfriended him. He regularly referred to girls as ‘sluts’ that ‘deserved what [came] to them’, and praised Hunter Moore for his “community service”. I hope he fucking dies.
Also, that woman is a fucking badass. God damn.
Many years ago I overheard a woman talking on a bus. She was a researcher and looking into ways of improving the lives of the disabled, she said something that touched me and has been a core part of my philosophy in building design and engineering ever since.
"Have you ever considered that people aren’t disabled but that we disable them with our designs"
That one sentence changed everything for me. I had never looked at it that way. Could it be that perhaps there’s nothing wrong with that person, and in fact we’re just bad designers and engineers. I quickly started imagining a world where there were no steps and only way to go up a floor was to use a stairlift what if all the movies only came in sign language or the books only in Braille. How disabled would I be in these worlds? I won’t hijack this post to talk about how the built environment is designed for men over women but I will say whatever service you’re offering or device your developing lets make sure to consider and include everyone.
